HUD and EDA Programs: Making the Economic Development/Brownfield Connection

Incentives can be an important variable in reducing the cost of capital used to finance a brownfield project. The federal government provides targeted brownfield funding through three programs — EPA’s assessment and cleanup grant programs and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) brownfield economic development initiative.

However, many communities have successfully tapped into other federal programs to help both public and private parties pursue brownfield projects. Much of this assistance has come through economic development programs offered by HUD and the Economic Development Administration (EDA).
