Brownie Awards Recognize Best Brownfield Projects

The Brownie Awards, which the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) started in 2001, recognize leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfield redevelopment across Canada. There are nine total categories for the awards.

The CUI received more than double the number of nominations this year, with 45 projects nominated from five provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick).

“Our hope when we instituted this program four years ago was to capture the imagination of developers, consultants and other key players in the industry,” CUI vice president Glenn Miller, says. “Not only has the number and quality of nominations grown, but we are getting projects from communities across the country, not just from Ontario. Brownfields is still a fledging area of practice in Canada, and the value of a credible awards program cannot be underestimated as a stimulus.”

Thinking big, the CUI hopes eventually to make the Brownies international, with special awards for international projects. The 2004 CUI Brownie Awards were sponsored by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corpor-ation (CMHC) and Ecolog Information Services.
