Residents of Spartanburg County attend a planning meeting.

The IBM - Neighborhood America Public Comment® Service was recently launched in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, to support the ReGenesis Environmental Justice Partnership, which is leading the planning efforts for redeveloping the county’s brownfield sites.

ReGenesis selected the service upon “recognizing that a strong public involvement program was essential to the success of redevelopment efforts,” explained Elena Rush, director of Spartanburg County’s Com-munity and Economic Development Department.

The service will be used to “collaborate internally, educate and engage stakeholders, identify important issues early in the project, provide access to information, and provide contact information for those with urgent, project-specific concerns,” stated Rush.

The service provides local, state and federal agencies, as well as consultants, with a Web-based application to collect, moderate, and report public comment. It enables project teams to gather and manage project data, and publish the content to a dedicated project Web site or government portal where citizens and stakeholders can view information and submit comments.
