GIS and Brownfields
International City/County Manage-ment Association (ICMA) has produced a brochure
that provides an introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) products
and their importance in brownfield redevelopment.
The publication highlights the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
(FDEP) use of GIS for management of brownfield redevelopment, and discusses
how GIS can facilitate multi-stakeholder engagement in brownfields. Click here

Transit Oriented Development
The Federal Transit Administration has released a report on the potential for
transit oriented residential development. In the report, the Center for Transit-Oriented
Development estimates 14.8 million households are expected to want housing within
a half-mile of rail systems by 2025 — more than double the number of households
living there today.
Meeting this demand would require building an average of 2,100 residential units
near each of the 3,391 transit stations that was studied. Click here to view

EPA Cleanup Market Report
The U.S. EPA has issued a report, “Cleaning Up the Nation’s Waste
Sites, Markets and Technology Trends, 2004 Edition,” which covers all
polluted sites in the United States, ranging from the most toxic Superfund sites
list to thousands of lightly to moderately contaminated brownfields.
The report states that up to 350,000 contaminated sites will require cleanup
over the next 30 years at a projected cost of up to $253 billion (not including
sites where cleanup is completed or ongoing). The list includes an estimated
150,000 sites that will require cleanup under state-mandated programs, including
voluntary cleanup and brownfield programs.
It also includes up to 125,000 leaking underground storage tank sites, 6,400
Department of Defense facilities and 5,000 Department of Energy sites that need
to be remediated. Click here to view the report.
