New Jersey’s Smart Growth Approach to Brownfield Redevelopment
By Susan Bass Levin and Dr. Frances E. Hoffman
New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is committed to redeveloping
the state’s brownfields, addressing the mistakes from the past and moving
toward an even brighter future.
New Jersey has become a national leader in economic performance and job growth.
Despite its status as the most densely populated state in the nation, the state
has seen a boom in new businesses, housing and educational institutions, preserved
open space and farmland and created recreational opportunities statewide.
New Jersey’s brownfield redevelopment programs are critical to continuing
intelligent, targeted development. Families and their communities are much better
served by having a new business or park take the place of a contaminated site
on their block.
DCA’s Office of Smart Growth helps make this possible. New Jersey has
always been ahead of the curve on brownfield redevelopment at the federal, state
and community levels. A comprehensive brownfield program has been launched to
coordinate the state’s resources and create incentives that encourage
the redevelopment of contaminated sites.
