Through
the creation of drainage ponds, Gretna unwittingly developed a habitat. |
By Ronnie Harris, Stephen D. Villavaso and Lesley Kordella
The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) works with its members and partners to meet
a challenge issued by THE U.S. EPA for America’s corporations —
reviewing where ecological reuse is viable in land restoration and cleanup programs,
and then actively pursuing these options.
WHC maintains cooperative agreements with EPA to research, develop and demonstrate strategic methods of incorporating natural space into the restoration design of a contaminated area or brownfield.
The City of Gretna and the collaboration of the Region 6 working group and the Southeast Louisiana Regional Planning Commission are examples of how partnerships and collaborative efforts across disciplines can create a sense of place for our communities as well as habitat for wildlife.

The Wildlife Habitat Council will present a look at Region 6 programs and case studies that highlight ecological reuse practices in site restoration at its “Restoring Greenspace: Ecological Reuse of Contaminated Properties” conference, May 17-18, 2005 in New Orleans.
