The U.S. EPA and the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency recently inspected nearly 50 underground fuel tank sites. The agencies fined 11 operators a total of $6,000 for violations.
In American Samoa, inspectors from the U.S. EPA and the American Samoa EPA issued fines totalling $2,100 to four facilities during a recent round of inspections. The inspectors also plan to work with a number of facilities after finding deficiencies with seven above-ground storage tanks during the inspections.
To prevent releases, federal law required all regulated underground storage tanks to have spill and overfill equipment and corrosion protection in place by Dec. 22, 1998.
The EPA frequently conducts unannounced tank inspections. Violators are required to correct the violations, submit documentation and pay the settlement amount within 30 days.
