Incentives for Florida Affordable Housing

Using incentives offered through Florida’s brownfield redevelopment program, the recently opened Malibu Bay Apartments, a 264-unit low- to moderate-income apartment complex was built on a former golf course.

The city of Clearwater designated 1,100 acres as Florida’s first brownfield area in 1997. Since then, 121 areas have been designated by local governments encompassing more than 75,900 acres, with 10 restoration projects complete and 64 cleanup projects under way. Together, Florida’s brownfield program has led to almost 4,500 new direct jobs, nearly 3,000 new indirect jobs and close to $397 million in capital investment.

Florida’s brownfield program provides financial and regulatory incentives to encourage voluntary cleanup and site redevelopment. The program is administered by DEP in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development and Enterprise Florida, Inc. BFN
