Mississauga Waterfront Trail Completed

Former Texaco Port Credit Refinery Site
Now Ready for Recreation

On November 3, 2005, project partners Imperial, Waterfront Trust and Ontario’s environment ministry gathered with members of Mississauga’s city council, local residents and media at an event in Mississauga to celebrate the trail’s completion.

The last link of the trail was completed in September. It consists of 600 meters of Imperial-owned land on the former Texaco Port Credit refinery site, along the shore of Lake Ontario. The refinery began operation in 1932 and closed in 1985. Imperial, the City of Mississauga and the Ministry of the Environment worked together to come to an appropriate agreement regarding the use of the land. Under the agreement, Imperial has leased the strip of land to the City of Mississauga for 20 years.

“Imperial values its relationships with the communities in which we operate and of the safety of the citizens that live there,” said Ed Charlton, property manager, Devon Estates Limited (a subsidiary of Imperial), who spoke on behalf of Imperial at the event. “The completion of the trail is a breathtaking addition to the city’s waterfront, and I was personally approached by many residents and local business owners who expressed their gratitude for what they felt was ‘a job well done’ by Imperial.”

Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion recognized Imperial for its positive contribution to the community and citizens of Mississauga through its work to open up land on the former refinery site for this final link of the public trail. She also said, “The city is committed to developing an exceptional waterfront for residents and visitors and we are fortunate to have partners like Imperial Oil to help us make that happen.”
