Pocket Parks a Solution for Tiny Spaces

Elizabeth, New Jersey, is enjoying restored traffic islands thanks to a collaboration between Groundwork Elizabeth, the City of Elizabeth and other groups. Groundwork Elizabeth, as part of a network of Groundwork USA Trusts, has as its mission “improving places, improving lives.” Their projects have not only upgraded the beauty of the city, but have also bolstered the self-esteem of those living around them.

One such project is Elmora Hills, where Groundwork Elizabeth, in cooperation with the City of Elizabeth, the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Assistance Program, the Master Gardeners of Union County, and the Elmora Hills community, worked together to transform a gateway traffic island from a green colored asphalt covered corner into a beautiful garden-like mini-park.

The residents help the Master Gardeners maintain this park, which three years after its dedication, looks better than ever. These pocket parks are an example of what can be done with very small brownfield sites. BFN
